Nessmuk, the pen name of George Washington Sears (1821-1890), has an intriguing origin. Let me share the fascinating story behind it:
Narragansett Indian Mentor:
In his younger years, Sears befriended a young Narragansett Indian. This Native American friend taught him essential skills related to hunting, fishing, and camping.
The name of this Native American friend was Nessmuk, which translates to “wood drake.”
Adopting the Name:
Inspired by his mentor and the valuable knowledge he gained, George Washington Sears decided to adopt the name Nessmuk as his pen name.
He also used this name for a couple of his canoes, further honoring the connection to his friend and the wilderness.
